Young Man Has Touching Reunion With His Birth Mother After Searching For 20 Years

For the past twenty years, Benjamin Hulleberg always knew he wanted to one day meet his birth mother, and recently, his wish has finally come true.

Hulleberg always knew he was adopted, and has a very good relationship with his adopted parents, Angela and Brian, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t curious about his birth mom.

Holly Shearer placed Hulleberg for adoption on Thanksgiving Day 20 years ago and had thought about him every day since.

Shearer was just 16 when she gave birth to her son, and the Hullebergs sent her letters and photos of her son for the first three years. Eventually, the updates stopped and their adoption agency closed in 2014.

Shearer, now 46, grew even more curious about her son and wanted to know if he was okay. One day, she searched online and managed to find his social media when he was 18.

The last thing Shearer wanted to do was throw a wrench in his life, so she just wanted him from a distance.

Little did she know, her son had been actively trying to find her for years. He wrote letters, signed up with an adoption registry, and took a DNA test in the hopes of finding her.

On Hulleberg’s birthday this past November, Shearer decided to message him, wishing him a happy birthday, without mentioning who she was.

Hulleberg asked her how she knew him, and when Shearer replied, explaining that she was his birth mother, he couldn’t believe his eyes.

“I was crying. It was all very positive emotions,” he told GMA. “But to me, this is a day I had been waiting for the past 20 years of my life and to imagine that it was finally happening was outrageous. It was a lot to take in.”

They both agreed that they wanted to meet in person as soon as possible, so they planned a dinner the next day to meet at Red Robin with both of their families.

When Hulleberg arrived, he tapped his birth mom on the shoulder, and they both sat hugging each other for five minutes while crying.

One amazing thing they learned was that both of them have worked at HCA Healthcare’s St. Mark’s Hospital in Salt Lake City in the last two years.

Hulleberg is a medical assistant at The Heart Center there, while his mom volunteers at the NICU.

Now, Hulleberg makes sure he visits Shearer’s office each week.

“It’s just exciting. I’m part of his life. Just knowing that his phone number is in my phone and I can call him or text him anytime … it’s amazing,” Shearer told GMA. “My heart is full.”

Hulleberg hopes his story will inspire other adopted people to never give up in finding their biological family, if that’s what they want.
