Just like how senior dogs are overlooked for puppies, black dogs are passed by for light-colored ones. Big black dogs spend more time in shelters and are at a higher risk of euthanasia.

The phenomenon is known as big black dog syndrome (BDS). While no one really knows why it occurs, shelters believe breed stereotypes and misconceptions that black dogs are “evil” play a part.
